Sew Loving Life

My adventures in "making" – mostly sewing & quilting – and in traveling.

Trip Log, December 10, 2018

I’m writing this from Meridian, Mississippi. (That’s location 9 on our trip map.) We are on our way home now, after spending a week Venice-Boothville, Louisiana. What is in Venice-Boothville? Just two things: heliports to oil rigs, and fish!

You can see why the heliports are here if you take a close look at location 8 on the map below.

No, I don’t fish. The other guy fishes. I just don’t see the point of beating the water, especially when one is going to let anything caught go free again. I don’t object to catch and release fishing; not at all. I think more avid fisher people should engage in good catch and release practices. (There’s no point of releasing a fish that is too stressed to live for very long, after all.) It’s just that I’d rather knit or crochet or cross stitch or read than fish. So I brought all of that, as well as a small sewing project with me. Plus, there is always giving Sophie a walk to help fill the time.

Larry asked his friend Carl to join him on this trip, which he was happy to do. Carl’s main goal was to catch a Redfish that was bigger than any Redfish he had previously caught. Toward that end, Larry and Carl arranged for fishing trips with local guides for each day Monday through Wednesday of last week. They were going from 5:30 AM to 4:30 PM everyday. I slept in until about 7:00 AM. I gave up 5:30 AM swim practices; I’m not about to get up that early for fish!

So how did they do? I only have a couple of pictures, but they claim that they caught some 70 plus fish in one day, all of them of admirable size. As for Carl’s goal of a bigger Redfish than he had previously caught, he did that the night he arrived, off the dock at the RV park. He may have gotten an even bigger one than that, but he definitely caught “his personal best” Redfish on this trip.

Larry and His BIG Fish

Larry’s fish make look a lot smaller, but that is just because Larry is taller. Yes, really.

  1. Sounds like a really pleasant time. Kudos on the giant fishes!

(Me? I’d have gone for long walks and maybe some swimming, then sat down to read.)
